Choosing between Miyako Island and Okinawa Main Island? This honest comparison covers beaches, diving, food, access, crowds, cost, and more. Find out which destination suits you best.
Miyako Island is for you if: you want the most beautiful beaches in Japan with minimal crowds, world-class diving, and a peaceful island escape. Okinawa Main Island is for you if: you want a mix of beaches, culture, history, nightlife, and international shopping — all in one convenient destination. Both are spectacular. But they offer completely different experiences. This guide will help you decide.
Miyako Island is consistently ranked Japan's #1 beach destination — and for good reason. Yonaha Maehama Beach (7km of powder-white sand) and Sunayama Beach regularly top national rankings. The water is impossibly clear: visibility 30–40m, turquoise color that almost looks fake. Okinawa Main Island has nice beaches too — Emerald Beach (near Churaumi Aquarium), Manza Beach, Nishihama — but the water isn't as clear, and the beaches are more crowded, especially in summer. Verdict: Miyako Island wins clearly for beach quality and "wow" factor.
Miyako Island has legendary dive sites: Touri-ike (Blue Hole), Manta Scramble, W-Arch, Yabiji Reef. Visibility 30–40m. Water temp 26–28°C in summer. Manta rays from October–June. Okinawa Main Island also has excellent diving around the Kerama Islands (30 minutes by ferry), but Miyako is considered a step above for advanced divers and photographers. For snorkeling, Yoshino Coast (Miyako) and Yabiji Reef offer some of the richest coral gardens in Japan. Verdict: Both are excellent — but Miyako offers more consistently world-class dive sites.

Go to Miyako Island if you are: a beach or ocean lover who wants "best in Japan" quality; a diver or snorkeler chasing world-class reefs; someone who wants quiet, uncrowded paradise; someone on a 2–5 day trip focused entirely on nature; a couple or family wanting a relaxed resort experience. Go to Okinawa Main Island if you are: a first-time Japan visitor wanting beach + culture; someone who wants more food variety (including international restaurants); nightlife-focused travelers; budget travelers (more flight options, cheaper accommodation); people who want side trips to Kerama, Zamami, or other smaller islands.
Miyako Island and Okinawa Main Island are connected by direct flights (45 minutes, ANA/JAL/Skymark, ¥8,000–25,000 one-way). A great combination: 2 nights Okinawa Main (culture, Naha sightseeing, Churaumi Aquarium) + 3 nights Miyako (beaches, diving, island drives). Or reverse it. Many travelers fly into Naha (more international connections), do one night, then fly to Miyako for the main experience. Verdict: If you have 5+ days and budget isn't a concern, do both.
